A Message From Porscha Day:
Yoga came into my life in 2018, at a time where I was trying to figure out who I was shortly after becoming a new mom and wife. While being a full-time employee, mom and wife, I have had the struggles of finding balance and incorporating time into my daily schedule to focus on my overall happiness and well-being. Once I realized that I was struggling, I turned to yoga and meditation.
This practice was a journey, and I became a certified teacher in Hatha Yoga. In addition, I took a certification for meditation just to learn more about quieting the noise around me. I was on a spiritual journey with a lot of questions that I felt needed answers. What I discovered was that I desired an outlet. Hot Yoga class is where I found this outlet. During those 90 minutes my only focus would be balancing and breathing. I was able to escape my thoughts, my worries, my problems in that hour and a half class. It truly brought me peace, some days it may have been my only moment of peace.
I wondered how I would have reacted in stressful situations if I had used these tools when I was going through some obstacles in my young adulthood. I realized that growing up yoga and meditation was something that I had not been introduced to. Instead, I saw the people surrounding me use other things to cope with life’s stressors. Whether that was drugs, alcohol, food, video games, or social media these were outlets that could inevitably cause more stress and not have the desired release that you would really need. These were ways that I would avoid my stress, and yoga was an outlet that taught me methods to confront my emotions and created an outlet for release.
In 2020 when the pandemic started, I was no longer able to go to in-person classes. This pushed me to start practicing yoga in-home along with meditation. My practice intensified, it was more than just the postures but my understanding of my body and mindset that was changing. This led to my interest in becoming YTT Certified. While on my at-home yoga journey I discovered that I was not able to find many Black-Woman led yoga classes online, and that was disheartening because representation truly matters. This also encouraged me to start my non-profit Black Girls Bend Inc. which is geared towards teaching young black girls the foundation of yoga and meditation.
As the years have gone by, I have grown in my career, and I have had life changing situations that we all face in some shape or form. It has been important for me to give myself grace when I allow myself to fall about my good habits, because I now have the foundation to make my way back to being more mindful and present in each day. I hope that as your trainer I can give you these same stepping stones.
